And that strength comes rushing back the moment you have a bad activation, such as 2-3 pods all at once. Now sure, late-game it's not "as" OP because of the strength of other units and the fairly poor scaling of the aliens. Except for Domination, all of their abilities are CDs as opposed to limited-use.
#XCOM 2 WAR OF THE CHOSEN PSI OPERATIVE PC#
They can permanently increase your squad size (especially OP for the final Vanilla mission on the PC since the final room isn't it's own mini-mission like it is in WotC and on console). That said that doesn't change the fact that Psi Ops are OP. they're really strong sure, but pretty much everything is really strong in the endgame. I don't think psi operatives are significantly better than what templars can do overall etc. On timed missions I think I value reapers higher than psi operatives too (granted they fill completely different roles, but even so) because being able to scout so quickly and safely on timed missions is such a huge advantage. Yes, psi operatives are really strong and all - but I don't think a psi operative contributes more than what a sharpshooter does with the hunter rifle. I'd say on the long untimed missions like attacking the chosen and the final mission psi operatives are really strong, but other than that I think they're only slightly above average compared to other characters.

I would say psi operatives 'eventually' get built in an optimal playthrough, but only once you have resources to spare, which is generally when the game is too easy to care about anymore.Īs far as how strong psi operatives are in the endgame (even though this isn't really very important because the endgame is too easy to care about). By the time it's worth investing in them (rushing psi operatives is way way worse than rushing for upgrading your weapons/armor because they take longer to pay for themselves) the game is already trivially easy - it honestly doesn't even matter how strong they are because they just take too long to get going, and the early game is so much more difficult than the lategame that anything that makes the early game harder to make the lategame easier is a waste of resources. I would say in terms of optimizing how likely you are to win the vanilla game, psi operatives are basically irrelevant. I am starting a new run right now with the purpose of rushing Psi Operatives so I can test my theory that it isn't all that amazing. On top of all that, you also need to train an actual soldier which takes time too and even then your Psi Operative is 'stealing XP' when going on missions because it is wasted on them. Which means you need to forgo weapons and armor research to get them and because of space and supplies, you need to not build two key structures until later such as the Infirmary, Training Center or Proving Ground. In order to have them be as good as claimed, you need them relatively early. While they are still strong soldiers at that point, so are Colonel Templars of which you will have one, maybe even two. But in the lategame, do you honestly even need MC or NL? I really don't think so. I asked myself, are they really though? They are absolutely insane if you get them early and very, very good in the midgame also. This question is sparked by another Reddit thread on another sub, where most people concluded that Psi Ops are OP.
